Anime and Manga

Some series are hard to nail down in just a few sentences. For now I’m just listing the ones I’ve seen and read and what my general impression was. If you would like to know more then I’m sure you will be able to find a wiki to accommodate that need ;) Perhaps in the future I will add a more personal touch by adding my fan-art and -fiction to some of these.

Anime

Angelic Layer

Angelic Layer

Misaki is a young girl that moves to Tokyo to live with her aunt. She becomes interested in a game called Angelic Layer where people mentally control small dolls to fight in an arena. She fights her way to the top with her cute angel Hikaru.

Another

Another

Kouichi is a transfer student that gets placed in class 3-3, which is said to be cursed. In this classroom he meets a girl that seems to be ignored by everyone, even the teachers. He seems to be the only one that acknowledges her, which makes you wonder if she is real or not. Eventually the curse does its thing and classmates start dying.

Bleach

Bleach

It’s one of those series that you have to watch, or at least try to watch (even if you don’t finish it). The series starts out with a fantastic intro, likeable/diverse cast, good world building and a clear story line but after episode 200 or so… it lost my interest. Still, it’s currently the only Anime I’ve created a separate page for Read more...

Avatar: The Legend of Aang

Avatar: The Legend of Aang

This series was broadcast on Dutch television multiple times and I’ll still watch it even if it’s a repeat. I’m generally not a big fan of dubs but this one was done very well and the humor isn’t lost in translation. I enjoyed this series enough to buy the box-sets which also provides the English version.

Avatar: The Legend of Korra

Avatar: The Legend of Korra

The new avatar series is a little more serious than The Legend of Aang. The subject matter is for a more mature audience and has lost much of the silly humor. I still enjoyed watching the series although I didn’t find Korra as likable as Aang was.

 Blue Submarine no. 6

Blue Submarine no. 6

I’ve seen this OVA a few times but the story is still a little confusing for me. The scientist Zorndyke has flooded the world killing much of the world population, the rest is being exterminated by his animal-human hybrids. We follow Hayami who is recruted to protect what is left of civilization. He becomes conflicted when he meets one of Zorndyke hybrits and finds, not all of them are the monsters he had perceived them to be.

Chobits

Chobits

In the near future many people have Persicons, which are androids that assist people with all sorts of tasks like shopping and communication. One day the student Hideki finds a cute Persicon at the side of the road and he decides to take her home. This Persicon is seemingly broken and can only say the word "Chi". Little by little he teaches her the basics and slowly falls in love with her.

Corps party

Corps party

As the title suggests, this is a horror/guro anime. A group of students perform a “friends forever” ritual and suddenly find themselves in an abandoned school with grizzly scenes and ghosts. They try to survive and desperately find their way back to the real world. Unfortunately not all of them will make it.

Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop

Jet Black is a retired cop and Spike Spiegel was a member of the Red Dragon crime syndicate, now they are bounty hunters, although not very successful ones. They take on-board a supposedly smart corgi called Ein, a woman with a mysteries past called Faye and a young hacker called Ed. The five of them make quite a team which unfortunately falls apart in the final episodes, where everyone goes their own way.

 Dark Stalkers

Dark Stalkers

This is an anime based on a fighting game by Capcom. It is a loosely connecting story which tries to give all of the available game characters some screen time. I’ve never played the game but I found the anime pretty good..

Death Parade

Death Parade

Has recently come out and was a real tearjerker… I cried my eyes out several times and I’m not even a very emotional person, some episodes just pulled my heartstrings, really hard! The series is high quality and beautifully animated, the story is a little slow but gets to the point eventually.

Denpa Teki Na Kanojo

Denpa Teki Na Kanojo

This anime only has two episodes but has an interesting story. Episode one describes a series of murders that our main character Juu Juuzawa tries to solve with the help of a mysterious girl called Ame Ochibana. The second episode is about an online game where people try to win by gaining "happy points", they can do that by taking other peoples happiness.

Dimension W

Dimension W

In the future the world is able to tap into “dimension W” for unlimited energy by using devices called “coils”. Where dimension XYZ are perceived space, dimension W is the dimension of possibility (the what if). During the series we follow coil hunter Kyoma and the robot Mira who are looking for illegally created coils. Where legit coils safely scratch the surface of dimension W to draw energy, the illegal version delves deep into it and can warp the very fabric of reality.

DragonballZ

DragonballZ

This is one of the few anime series shown on Dutch television, unfortunately the network that showed it liked endless reruns. Although the English dub isn’t bad I prefer the sub whenever possible and I’ve seen most of it in Japanese. I enjoyed the series but it can also be very frustrating when a single fight (or even a single attack) takes multiple episodes.

 Dragon Half

Dragon Half

The main character Mink is a teenage half dragon girl that falls in love with a famous dragon slayer (and singer) Dick Saucer. She is naive but can stand her ground and throw a solid punch when necessary.

Elfen Lied

Elfen Lied

Diclonius are a mutation within humans and Lucy seems to be the first “queen bee”. By touching humans men with her invisible hands (psychokinetic hands called vectors) she can infect them and create another diclonius (Silpelit). Declonii in the anime have horns and pink hair which makes them very distinctive. Most are quite homicidal and usually end up killing their host family and pretty much anyone that possess the slightest treat.

FLCL

FLCL

I love this series, it’s such a fun, wacky and energetic anime! The story isn’t completely clear to me as much isn’t properly explained, you just have to except what you are seeing and enjoy the ride. Everyone that likes anime should see this one and if I ever find it in the story I’m definitely going to buy it!

Hellsing

Hellsing

The main character in the anime is Seras Victoria who use to be a police officer before being turned into a vampire by the legendary Alucard. She is accepted by the Hellsing Organization that is dedicated to exterminating destructive non-humans. During the thirteen episodes she tries to come to terms with her new vampire existence and task of eliminating other vampires and their creations. The episodes can fluctuate quality wise but the awesome action scenes and the music that accompanies it makes up for that.

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kai

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kai

Furude Rika is a girl that has been reliving the last weeks of her life over and over for many years. She would have stopped trying to change her grizzly fate if it wasn’t for the fact that she is sort of a “queen bee”, if she died then the whole village dies. She is losing hope until she puts her fate in the hands of her friends and together they try to keep her from being murdered.

Kill la Kill

Kill la Kill

If you are looking for a colorful, wacky, series and you don’t mind anime girls in skimpy clothing, then this series might be for you. The main character is called Ryuko Matoi, she transferred to Honnōji Academy searching for the person that murdered her father. She stumbles onto a plot to take over the world using living clothing.

Serial Experiments: Lain

Serial Experiments: Lain

Many people that have seen this series have trouble explaining its significance. This is my theory; People use the internet (in this case “the wired”) to put themselves out there. Some have only a small part of themselves in this virtual world and some become wholly absorbed by it. Even when they die a part of them will always remain online and therefore alive. But what if the opposite was possible, where an online persona can project itself into the real world. That is that Lain is, an online persona made flesh.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Two things that is clear after watching this series is that you should not enter into a contract without reading the small print and that some gifts require an equal sacrifice. Madoka and her friend Sayaka Miki are offered the chance to become a magical girl by a cute (although expressionless) little cat creature. Magical girls are charged with the protection against witches and for their service they receive a single wish. The idea is appealing at first, until they find out what it will ultimately cost them.

Mirai Nikki (Future Diaries)

Mirai Nikki (Future Diaries)

Junior-high student Yukiteru Amano unwillingly finds himself in a battle royal with thirteen other unknown players. The last surviving player becomes the new god and it will allow the current world to continue. All the players have a tool on which they can track future events in their own unique way, for most this tool is a mobile phone.

Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou

Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou

Mythical creatures exist and are slowly being integrating into human society. To help the integration along they are placed with host families. Through chance and mismanagement our protagonist ends up becoming host to several females who all vie for his affection.

Naruto

Naruto (Shippuden)

This series has been running for a very long time and I’ve pretty much watched all of it. Unfortunately it sometimes feels like half of the episodes are fillers. Some filler episodes are nice as they provide background story on interesting characters, sometimes they are just a waste of time.

Panty & Stocking

Panty & Stocking

The first thing you will notice is the animation style which is very “Powerpuff girls” but this series is very much meant for adults. Panty and Stocking are angels that have been kicked out of heaven. They can earn their way back into heaven by collecting coins they receive from defeated monsters. When they are not kicking monster butt they are having sex (Panty) and eating sweets (Stocking).

Psycho Pass

Psycho Pass

Imagine a society devoid of crime, where everyone works in the job suitable for them. A society where people’s emotions are checked 24/7 and the unstable are weeded out before they can harm others. Within this system there are teams of inspectors and enforcers who are allowed to use deadly force to subdue people that the system analyses as high risk. Unfortunately no system is without fault and they find themselves in a web of deceit. But who is worse, the "criminals" or the system which they serve?

Pupa

Pupa

A sister comes into contact with a strange red butterfly and is transformed into a bloodthirsty monster. She attacks her brother and although he survives he has been changed. He is able to regenerate grieves wounds and decides to sacrifice himself to sate his sisters need for human flesh.

Scryed

Scryed

There is an island where after a disaster some people have been gifted with the ability to create alters. These alters are different for everyone, it can be armor, a weapon or sometimes sentient creations. Alter users are frequently targeted by the mainland for experimentation and assimilation into their special forces called HOLY.

Shiki

Shiki

Sotoba is a sleepy town where nothing exciting ever seems to happen. This peaceful existence slowly crumbles when a new family moves in and people start to fall seriously ill and die. The local doctor tries desperately to save his ever growing number of patients and little by little he comes to the conclusion that this plague is caused by vampires. His fears are confirmed when his own wife falls ill.

Shingeki No Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

Shingeki No Kyojin (Attack on Titan)

This is one of those anime series that is quite shocking the first time you watch it. The series seems to enjoy torturing it’s audience by introducing character after character just so it can kill them just as fast. The series currently doesn’t have a satisfying ending even though the manga it is based on continues on.

Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul

Ken thinks he is the luckiest guy in the world when he gets a date with a beautiful woman called Rize. It’s a real shock when at the end of their date she tries to eat him! She doesn’t get the chance as an accident almost ends both their lives. Ken survives after having some of Rize’s organs transplanted in him, receiving her ability to regenerate and more. He is changed into a half ghoul who now requires human flesh to survive. He joins a group of ghouls that try their best to live peacefully within human society. They are, like many of their kind, hunter mercilessly by a special forces team called the CCG's Reapers.

Trigun

Trigun

Vash the Stampede is the most wanted man on the planet. Although he can't quite recalling what happened that day, he has been said to have razed a whole town. Trouble now seems to follow him around like a black cat (*wink* there is one in every episode *wink*). Two female insurance agents are send to try and minimize the destruction. The series is enjoyable to watch with a few story twists, the animation is a little dated.

Watamote

Watamote

Ever wondered what it is like to be an extreme socially awkward girl then this is your chance. Tomoko Kuroki is probably one of the most extreme versions of the socially awkward girl which leads to some very funny and sometimes relatable situations. The series is only twelve episodes and they are not what you would call action packed, neither does it really have a (in my opinion) satisfying ending.

Wolf’s Rain

Wolf’s Rain

The earth is dying and the only hope left is a legend only few believe in, a paradise that can only be found and opened by wolves. Wolves have been hunted to extinction and the few that still live hide themselves disguised in human form. A group of wolves comes together and go on a journey to find paradise. It’s a story of hope and immense loss.

Manga

Blade of the Immortal

Blade of the Immortal

The story is set in feudal Japan. There is a new movement sweeping thru the land. A group of swordsman called the Ittō-ryū who live under the motto “victory above all else” are executing any dojo leader and its apprentices who still go under the old bushido dictum. Rin’s father (a dojo leader) and her mother were also brutally killed by the Ittō-ryū. Desperate for revenge she hires an immortal swordsman called Manji to protect her while she seeks Anotsu, the Ittō-ryū’s leader. You can find the complete novel at mangarock.com

Feng Shen Ji

Feng Shen Ji

Also known as ‘Chronicles Of The God's Order, The Legend And The Hero’, is an absolutely beautifully drawn manga, in full colour no less! It’s a story of a young prince that witnesses the fall of his father’s empire to the might of the gods. His mother sacrifices herself to give him a chance to escape. Through pain and hardship he learns humility, wisdom and strength. After the gods show their cruelty once more, he decides to finish the fight that his father started. You can find the complete novel at mangarock.com

Hive

Hive

I’m usually not a fan of down-scrolling manga but this one caught my interest right from the start. Hive is an apocalyptic scenario situated in South Korea, brought about by giant insects. We follow a growing group of survivors that battle their way through various dangers to save the main-characters wife and child. You can read this comic at webtoons.com

I am a Hero

I am a Hero

This manga is becoming very popular. The story is about a geeky guy that finds himself in a zombie apocalypse. He stumbles onto a girl that seems to understand what zombies want and after she is bitten by a zombie he can’t bring himself to destroy her. She eventually recovers and they both try to survive in a world gone mad. The story has recently found its conclusion.mangarock.com

Ito Junji

Itō Junji novels

Itō Junji is a horror manga artist that I really admire for his creativity. He has his own style, which is very recognizable and detailed. His stories are truly original and in my opinion he is a creative genius, it’s frightening what the human mind can come up with. I especially enjoyed his novel “Uzumaki” which details a town where everyone becomes possessed by spirals. You can find some of his novels on guromanga.com

Song of Sapphire

Naked Star - Song of Sapphire Star

This is a 41 page short story. I’m not entirely sure what the story is about as the translation doesn't make a 100% sense to me. The story seems to be about a couple that lives on a large spaceship that is trying to return to earth. There is a bombing and the girl is mortally wounded, her boyfriend places her in cold-sleep but freezes to death in the process (he dies thinking she didn’t make it). They are found over a thousand years later and she and the baby she was carrying are revived. The boyfriend was completely healed as well but stays in a comatose state, reliving the events leading up to their demise. The little girl in the story is his daughter trying to awaken him.

Shut Hell

On arrival they soon find that they are not alone, roaches have evolved into humanoids and are less then friendly. The team soon find themselves in a fight for survival against a quickly adapting enemy. You can follow this ongoing series at mangarock.com

Ero Manga (NSFW)

Arnis

Arnis

Arnis Iskaris is a Mooneyes thief/assassin for hire. I’m not entirely sure what kind of creature a Mooneyes is, she looks like a cross between an elf and a cat. They are one of few remaining mystical creatures and possess extraordinary healing ability which makes them almost immortal. Without this healing ability she would have been dead many times over as throughout the series she suffers many horrendous wounds!

Bondage Fairies

Bondage Fairies

These are multiple stories about fairies Phil and Pamila. They are protectors of the forest and the creatures within. They are also quite the nymphos who will have sex with just about anything! You can find a number of their stories on hcomicbook.com

Princess of Darkness

Princess of Darkness

Maki is an 18 year old student that isn't having a lot of luck in life. Her parents died, any money she inhered was used to pay of her father’s debt and... ow yes, she gets raped a lot. There is one upside though, she has in her possession a magical tome with which she can summon a demoness to defend her (although, usually after the fact). You can find part of the series on hcomicbook.com

Tokyo Red Hood

Toukyou Akazukin

This is a story is about a strange young girl that's dressed up like "little red riding hood" and is looking to be devoured by mister wolf. She teams up with a group of exceptional "people" who soon find themselves in a battle between the forces of heaven and hell. This hentai/guru manga is very well drawn and has a good, although disturbing storyline. You can read the whole manga at guromanga.com

Hentai (NSFW)

Hentai

Hentai

There are tons of hentai out there, many of questionable quality (animation, story and morally). I can’t say I’m a huge fan but there are a few that I’ve enjoyed watching as much as any anime, there is just more sex involved. I’ve listed a few that rise a little above the norm.

 Angel Blade

Angel Blade

This hentai is a three episodes story about an unnecessarily scantily clad heroine. She protects the woman of city number 69 from mutants trying to rape them. The animation style is quite good and I think that many will find it sufficiently entertaining.

 Bible Black

Bible Black

I believe this is one of the most well-known hentai’s. It’s a six episodes story about a female cult practicing black magic to gain sexual power over others. I’m not a big fan myself, the story is good but the animation style really bugs me. The female bodies are very “boney” and extremely shiny… their skin looks like they have a layer of wax covering it.

 Cool Devices

Cool Devices

These are eleven separate episode that each have their own story and animation style. Most of these aren’t sweet love stories with some sex involved but center around BDSM and rape. Episode (Operation) number 07, Yellow Star has the same animation style as Kite and Mezzo Forte.

 Dragon Pink

Dragon Pink

This is a bit of an RPG type hentai. You have a fighter, a barbarian, a mage and… a slave cat-girl. The cat-girl Pink is the main character, she is in love with the fighter called Santa. Unfortunately for Pink, her boyfriend Santa is a bit of a dick! The animation style and the story is pretty good but the fact that Pink is willing to do anything for her boyfriend, while he is just using her, makes me not like this hentai.

 Dragon Rider

Dragon Rider

Rike is a knight on a mission to find a dragon mount, he stumbles onto a very special girl called Karisu. After demons attack her village and kill her mother she joins Rike on his quest. During their travels they develop feeling for one another, this wouldn't be a problem if it wasn’t for the fact that Rike already has a “girlfriend”, a princess in fact. That’s the biggest thing that bothered me about this hentai, he knows that princess Lydia is in love with him but instead of being honest with her about his love for Karisu, he leads her on and then goes off with Karisu.

F3

F3

Frantic, Frustrated and Female. I especially enjoyed the first episode as it covers a real life problem some woman suffer from. Having organisms isn’t always easy and for some it seems to be impossible. The main character Hiroe is one of these woman and is extremely frustrated as she feels like she is letting her boyfriend down (he doesn't know as she fakes it so not to hurt his feelings). One day, her sister catches her at it and tries to give her a helping hand.

Inma Seiden

Inma Seiden

There is a conflict between the Kameyama family and the Otori family. The Kameyama are trying to gain control by using a ritual to summon a powerful demon. This ritual requires girls to be sacrificed. Although she doesn’t fully understand what is going on, Mao our main character tries her very best to stop this from happening, as the chosen girls are her class mates.

Kite

Kite

This is one of the more sinister titles out there, it even has a disclaimer that all characters depicted are of legal age… Anyone watching this hentai will find that statement laughable as the “heroine” of the story was clearly no more than a child when first introduced to sex. Even so this hentai offers good quality animation and some really great action scenes.

La Blue Girl

La Blue Girl

This is both an ero-manga and a hentai of fluctuating quality. The main story involves a young girl called Miko Mido who is a novices ninja of an all-female ninja clan. Her clan has made a pact with demons on which they can call to protect them from other rival ninja clans. These demons are called the Shikima and live in a parallel dimension. Miko has a very special bond with the Shikima world as her father is the demon king.

MeiKing

MeiKing

Cain has become lord of Norland and although young, he tries his best to be a responsible and respectable ruler. If he proves himself worthy he may vie for the princesses hand in marriage. During his rule he helps and befriends several woman, who provide him with sex in return.

Mezzo Forte

Mezzo Forte

Nicely animated, some great action/sex scenes and an alright story. This is a hentai well worth watching! The story involves a group of mercenaries who end up on the radar of a mob organization after they kidnap it's boss.

Midnight Panther

Midnight Panther

A group of female assassins for hire move around looking for work. They pose as entertainers called the “The Pussy Cats”. The group consists of an old woman specialized in potions (poisons), a dark-haired beauty who uses her best features to her advantage, a spunky blond who likes to "sink her teeth" into her job and a boyish girl with a mysterious past.

Spaceship Agga Ruter

Spaceship Agga Ruter

The spaceship Agga Ruter is highly sought after by space pirates. On this ship there is a mysterious woman called Kei and the young boy Taiyo. Kei has adopted the boy after his parents were killed and has provided him with proper education, including an extensive sexual one. He gets to use her teachings when their ship is captured by pirate captain Jannis. They eventually befriend her and the pirate captain decides to assist them in their quest.

Twin Angels

Twin Angels

Sex demons are trying to corrupt a boy and change him into their demon king. If they succeed then the world will be theirs for the taking. The celestial twin girls Ai and Mai, try to keep both the boy and their own virginity safe. Unfortunately they aren’t completely successful in doing either.

Words Worth

Words Worth

There are very few hentai series/movies that are well animated and have a mildly engaging story but this is one of them. The land of light and shadow have been fighting for as long as either sides can remember. There is a legend that peace will be restored when a special stone tablet has been made whole. The only person capable of doing this is a person with blood mixed of light and shadow.
